The second shot brings out the color in the water and clouds, but you're really starting to lose definition in the rest of the sky on the left. I don't mind the first shot at all, it has a very nice mood. Just work on doing some minor tweaks to bring out the colors and exposure- nothing too drastic.
Nice shot, by the way!

From a totally non-professional newbie.....I like the original shot untouched. All the space around the boat gives a dramatic sense of isolation and quiet...makes me think of what might be around the corner...I get a feeling of contemplation.
Just my 2 cents. I wouldn't change it

Jon, First, let me thank you. Let me explain why. As a new photographer, I am avidly reading and reviewing everything I can. I find your feedback most helpful, constructive, honest, and tasteful on all posts. That is appreciated.
Second, I would not crop the top. I would crop the bottom and accentuate the sky. No, the beautiful sunset is not present, but I think the shot can appear more vast, in a sense, by reducing the amount of water. Whatever you do, love your shots and your commentary.
