Wow! You guys gave me a lot to work with! I can't wait to get a few moments to work on the image. I will post what I come up with soon so I can see if I got what you are suggesting.

Thanks for the support!

Default Here is my implementation of the suggestions.

I really like the results of your suggestions. I was so stuck on a standard aspect ratio that I couldn't see the much better image I had waiting for me.

Thanks again!

You're welcome. You can use this image as a reminder. Next time when you're out there shooting, ask yourself: "Would this be better in landscape or in portrait orientation."

Better, but I would still prefer a landscape orientation. Like navcom said, the portrait orientation often feels too confined. In your shot, there is more land on the left side that I would like to see - it feels a bit cut off. The bottom line is to choose what you like the best.

Oooh.. I really like that square crop, it seems to suit the shapes found in the shot. It's definitely better than the original, but that's a personal opinion.

But as Milosh and Krusty said, the really good thing that's come out of this thread is that you've learned to think outside of the box.. You're thinking not just of where you're pointing your camera, but how you're pointing it as well, you're the artist, not the camera, the camera is the paintbrush, despite all the automated settings it's still you that has the ultimate say as to how the picture looks, so thinking about the end product and how you want it to look at the time you're taking the shot, not just pointing your black box in the direction of something pretty and hoping for the best, is definitely an important learning milestone.

I love the new crop. My eye stays in the image now - doesn't feel a need to see beyond the edges. Beautiful spot.

Wasn't part of the original discussion, but just wanted to say I really like this shot with the square crop!
