Technically it's a good photo..
But it doesn't speak to me. I'm guessing in a series, perhaps strating with apple blossom and ending with maggots all over this, or something like that, this would be an interesting photo.. Or in a series showing rotton fruit on the ground.. But on its own it's just a rotton apple.

If I hadn't read your description, I would have thought you were trying to show the contrast of the green growing grass against the decaying apple. I don't really get the "cycle" impression from this.
I can't think of another way to show the "urbanic cycle of life" off the top of my head. That sounds like a tough assignment. Maybe show something like a garbage truck next to a growing plant? As a side note - the colors look a little flat. A levels adjustment may fix that.
