Used the 10 stop for this one, first real attempt. Have done a couple more since but thought I`d post this one up to see...

Here are the critique rules. Did you mean to post in the SYS forum?

1. Only ONE new critique request per day(24 hour period) for ENTIRE critique section. Choose your image carefully.
2. Please post only ONE image in the thread. If you need to show more, link it to your set. If you post more than one, the other will be deleted at the moderators discretion.
3. Please keep images to 740px on the longest side. Mods reserve the right to resize oversize images or delete them until resized. This is easy to put up the proper size if you use flickr. If you feel it is necessary for us to see a larger size, link to it.
4. We strongly encourage the use of a photosharing site such as flickr, photobucket, zoomr, etc.
5. Please include the following information, if possible, with your image: EXIF info, type of camera, specific questions (What do you think? is not a specific question). A meaningful title, NOT "Critique Please", will also get your post noticed in a crowded section, as well as any additional information you can give about the conditions in which you shot.
6. Only post if you are willing to be critiqued - this isn't a place for showing off, but a place for people to suggest how you can improve. If you don't think you need to improve then this might not be the section of our forums for you.

Not quite.. You missed the bit where you were supposed to give us a clue what aspects you wanted critiquing on? Please don't say "Everything"... Everyone who gives that answer ends up not getting their photo critiqued and I very much want to comment on this as I've just bought a 10 stopper myself.

Just a word of warning about the 10-stop filters. They're not supposed to, but they seem to allow a lot of magenta into your image. It's not terribly difficult to pull out in LR, PS or GIMP, but just be aware that it's there. I bought mine last fall and have used it a handful of times.

Thanks EOBeav.. I just looked at my order, and it was a 6 stop B+W filter I went for eventually.. I looked at the light curves on the B+W website and the 10 stopper has a fairly flat curve until you get to the red end, where it goes up at a steep angle.. Meaning it lets up to 6 times as much light in at the red point on the curve.. A definite colour cast.. The 6 stopper was much flatter.. I might not be able to get the same settings as the 10 stopper, but I won't get a colour cast either, since I can compensate the stop difference to some extent with aperture settings, the trade off seemed worth it.

Wish other manufacturers offered these graphs.

This is the graph I saw:

I think I need to get another ND grad before thinking about one of those 6 or 10 stop NDs.

I find the scattered pieces of kelp/vegetation distracting. It makes my eye wander over the image. Compounding that is the fact that I don't find that one rock in the water a compelling subject. So, I think a stronger subject is needed to improve this shot. Having a sunrise/sunset in the background always helps too.

I suppose I just wanted it critiqued on being a 10 stop exposure as it`s really my first attempt at that kind of photography...

I`ve already learned how it might not quite work as a good 10 stop/long exposure image but just wanted peoples thoughts on it in general.

I`d also like some critique on the beach itself as the lead in and on the misty water effect.

As I say though, I`ve realised a good deal since posting it actually so hopefully my next attempts will be better.

Yeh, I was actually aware of the magenta cast the 10 stop can produce... I believe the lee big stopper causes a blueish cast also but that`s supposed to be easier to correct in pp. Would you/anybody have any good tips at correcting the magenta casts as I`m finding it quite difficult. I think it can add to the image sometimes and quite like it but not always...

Well sunsets are pretty much out as it`s a north facing beach...

As for the kelp I thought they helped with the lead in but I can see now, once youv`e mentioned it that they might be a little distracting.

Was going for as much minimalism as I could get with the shot but I only had my 12-24 with me so couldn`t get any closer to the single rock and the waves were coming right up to my feet too...

Next time maybe.

Thanks all...

That's awesome, Jon, I hadn't seen one of those charts before. I've got a 3-stop and a 10-stop, but nothing in between. That leaves a pretty big gap. I've got a birthday coming up, but I've already got my eye on a new tripod/ballhead combo. Oh well, there's always Christmas.

I hope you don't mind, but I edited your shot to improve the contrast and color. Here's what I came up with:
