Default When Smoke Gets in the Tree

Hello all, I am not sure if this is the correct category for this shot or not. It was post processed to add an Infra-Red effect but the photo is landscaped focused.

Please provide comments to the composition and treatment of effect. Does it work, is it too much or too little? Should the entire photo be softened to create a more dreamy mood?

Camera: NIKON D5000
Focal length: 100*mm*(equiv. 150*mm)
Aperture: F8
Exposure time: 1/160" (+0.33*EV)
ISO speed rating: 200/24°
Program: Manual
Metering Mode: Pattern
White Balance: Manual

I think it's a pretty nice image. My preference, though, is that I'd like to see it cropped a little more loosely. That would give the subject more room to breathe and it would help define the sense of place and environment a little bit more.

Daniel,

Thanks for the comments. I see what you mean. Unfortunately, this is the base image and was not cropped post-processing. This was taken from a moving train (Durango/Silverton) so I did not have time to take multiple shots. That said, your comment helps me when faced with a chance to do a similar composition.

I do have another image pulled back with a wider view but thought it was not as moody.

That's pretty cool!

To my mind, the colours are too rich for a colour infra-red effect. Having said that, it's beautiful as it is and I wouldn't change it.

As it's your base image, I think it needs to be cropped tighter - definitely crop out the dark mass on the left. A square crop centered on your frame could work well.

Thanks for the comments and suggestions. The dark mass is actually the rock cliff. Here is the picture cropped without the dark structure.

Nice image..

I'd quite like to see this in portrait format with the tree coming in from the bottom left corner and crop out some of the dead space on the right... I think that would give the tree a sense of height.. I'm not sure you need to soften, it's already got the dreamy feel you're after.

But for a picture from a moving train, it's a damn fine shot.. Well done.
