Default Snowy Morning in the Mitten

Hi everyone! I took this shot when I was taking the dog out one morning.

Any advice is more than welcome, could I get advice on:
1. What I should have focused on as the subject of this picture
2. What horizon others would have used (it seems like the foreground, road, lake, and actual horizon could all have been the horizon to place on the third)
3. The coloring/brightness of the sunrise vs the rest of the scene

Sunrise 1.2
amera Canon EOS REBEL T1i
Exposure 0.006 sec (1/160)
Aperture f/29.0
Focal Length 55 mm
ISO Speed 1600

Thanks!

I like the picture as a whole but find the little tree in the foreground distracting but as a newb I don't know how I would have corrected it. I like how the two evergreens frame the rest of the shot.

Thanks for the comment! I agree with you, there is just so much going on in the shot. But I do like those pine trees with all the snow on the branches.

The shot is great except the trees in the foreground. Maybe a different camera position to get past those trees. The evergreens would make a great frame.

A chainsaw would achieve the same effect! Either that or simply step in front of that little tree.
That might also have given you a bit more sunlight reflection off the snow, whic would be nice.

I think an ND Grad filter (probably a soft one) would help temper the sky so you can have a more even exposure.. The sky seems over exposed, and the ground under..
