I was mostly struck with how deserted the play area was on a beautiful, sunny, summer's day, especially considering that it was midday on a Sunday.

In my honest opinion, what I would say is that the colors are missing... maybe you could try adding a bit more saturation in it. Looks a little flat to me. Composition wise, I think its fine... although I'll leave it to the experts to comment on that.
