Default It doesn't look right, can you tell me why?

Very new to photographing and don't know much about it at all.... I'm trying to get my head around why some photo's look good and some photo's just don't! Particularly looking at composition at the moment (one step at a time and all that) - could you give me your feelings on this photo and what would have made it better!
Thanks

I actually really like this photo. I think it's balanced very well and it has a great exposure, simple composition with two distinct subject elements that play off of each other and interesting light.

I think the only thing that might make this shot better is more vibrant light in the sky.

Nice job!!

I have to agree with Dan. I really like it. Very haunting with the mist behind the trees. Great job!

I will boost your ego also I do like the photo a great deal. From a composition perspective I would probably prefer to see the trees silhouetted, versus showing some of their frontal detail. You could probably accomplish this easily with PS. It would give it a more haunting look and would allow you to show off the same photo in 2 slightly different and effective ways.

It looks great!

Jeff

Thanks for your replies - As a newbie to photography its nice to know I am doing something right - and to know there is hope for me as i get better! Will try playing in PS and seeing if I can get the trees more in silhouette and see how it turns out!
Thanks

Very nice color and contrast. You have captured a mood really well. As far as what doesn't feel right, I think your image would appear much more pleasant and balanced if there was more breathing around your two subjects, both above and on the side. Backing up or shooting with a wider focal length would help this. Finally, the top of the tree on the right is clipped off in your image, which doesn't help. Aside from the framing, you have a really nice shot!

He is correct, the clipping off of the tree on the right is a drawback. If you create another version via post-processing post them side by side so we can see.

Cool! I was hoping someone in DPSland would like it! I wish I could attach a Samuel Jackson .wav file.
