Default Composition and Color ????

Hi all, I was hoping I could gain some feedback good and bad. I like to think this is one of my best shots. However it don't have the WOW factor... Any suggestions I'll be going back to this place at the end of the month. I don't think this ice will be there like this but you never know!! Any tips or suggestions upon my return would be great. HERE are more from that trip

Make:Canon
Model:Canon EOS 20D
Shutter Speed:1/250 second
Aperture:F/9.0
Focal Length:80 mm
ISO Speed:100

Thank you!

I think it's technically very good. I really like the colors and the sense of depth from top to bottom. There are some interesting "zones" working from foreground to background.

I agree, though, that right now, it's "just" a scene. A specific subject of some sort might help out -- the ice formation is close, but a little too anonymous. Is there ice forming over anything we'd recognize?

The ice formed over sand? so that large chunk you see is ice covered sand. Odd I was amazed to see this myself. I think if there was a log or something branching out it might have more impact. Even a washed up boat. That's one of my larger issues (finding something to focus on)
Thanks again!!!

That is a cool scene with potential. I looked at your other shots and I like the landscape orientation one better. It has more flow, as your eye naturally follows the shoreline into the distance. Add a cool sunset and you would have your WOW shot.

As for the one you posted, I agree that there is a lot of visual interest, but there is no focal point to tie it all together. As navcom said, the portrait orientation for landscape shots often feels too confined.

I think that your main issue is that those clouds are preventing some compelling sunrise colors (or sunset, I can't tell which). Much of landscape photography is about getting the right light, so there's not much you can do when the colors just aren't there.

In landscape photography, when you shoot is more important than where you shoot.

It is about the light I hope to make either sun set or some point with in the golden hour for my next shot of these or like this. Thanks for your input!!

Speaking of ice formations, I just saw some footage of a lighthouse encased in ice in Cleveland (Lake Erie). Pretty phenomenal sight.
