I was composing shots of Multnomah Falls in my mind and looking around saw the tree with its moss, viens, and ferns and said to myself that's a picture. It was an overcast rainy day and the greens and yellows would not succumb to gloom of the rainy day.
I have been working hard at learning to think through my composition and create more interesting photographs attempting to take them to a higher level but am not sure I am getting it. What could I have done different to create a more interesting photograph? Should I have centered the tree? ![]() Canon EOS Digital Rebel Lens 18-55mm fl\42 f\8 1/20 sec ISO 100 Flickr: benchdog1's Photostream |

It's a nice subject, I just wish it was separated from it's background a little better.
I love Multnomah Falls. I hope you were able to get some good shots of the bridge & falls while you were here, even though it was raining.

I don't think centering the tree would have helped. I think if it was more dominant and separated from the background it would stand out as the subject. Had you not stated it was the subject in the description, I wouldn't have known.

I am not sure what I could have done different with my camera settings or in processing to make the tree stand out more and not make it look over done.

Try this. Just a suggestion for a starting point. Load the photo into photoshop, duplicate the background layer, set the blend mode to 'Soft Light' and the layer opacity to 50%. Then add a hue/saturation adjustment and boost the yellows and greens slightly. With all of these I try to start with small amounts and gradually increase and try not to "over cook" them.

Took a peek at flicker it looks better to me there for some reason. I compared this to 29.jpg Such a pretty place isn't it. I have hiked it before my self!!
Think the colors pop a bit better on the flicker photo! |

It's a beautful place. My only reget is that I only had a few hours to enjoy the ride along Rte 30. The best is the wife and I are going to plan a vacation here in 2011. After I left and came back to the photo I like the way the colors pop drawing my attetion to the tree.
