Default End of Summer

So I took this photo a few days ago. I am not usually a fan of leaving color in black and white photos; but I was hoping to create a sense of summer coming to an end. I converted the picture to black and white and left the deflated inner tube yellow. Is it distracting? Does the image portray a sense of summers end? Suggestions for improvement? Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

Very interesting idea.

IMHO, the inner tube is too small for me to realize what it is. Not sure I would have known, unless you said something. In addition, with the floating dock positioned right behind the inner tube, my eyes keep going to it since it is bigger and more complex.

If you can reshoot, maybe try the idea with the inner tube more of the subject. Larger in the frame.

Just my 2c's

haha yeah that does make sense. I showed it to a couple others and they couldn't tell what it was. I'll have to head back and try to re-shoot. Thanks for the input

I'd have to agree with divotmaker, I had no idea what it was and just saw a patch of yellow in an otherwise nicely processed shot, but that left it lacking any real subject.
I also agree about recomposing it, if you have the chance. Possibly hang the inner tube up on the post so it's more obvious what it is, and get in closer, put the inner tube on a third line intersection.
Personally I don't like the selective colouring, I prefer to sometimes simply selectively desaturate but only by a small %age. e.g. leave the innner tube as it is but decrease the saturation of the rest of the pic so the inner tube stands out but so that the shot doesn't look too 'altered'.
Wow, what an essay, I hope some of it helps!

Thanks for the input! I like the idea about hanging the tube, and also partially desaturating the picture.
