Default Progress

I titled this picture 'Progression' as it is one of my first atempts at photography. It was taken of an old church in New York, and I believe I was using my old Canon Powershot (before it was desroyed by my ex). I was living in Baltimore at the time and this was on of many trips into the city with some friends from back home.

I saw this church surrounded by skyscrapers and highrises on all sides and fell in love with how delicately it was framed in a modern city, as well as how well preserved the church itself was amongst all this progression. The photo was taken from across a busy intersection, from a playground.

I don't even consider myself an amature photographer, but at the requests of some close and old friends of mine, I've decided to through my hat into the ring and give it a shot. What I'm most interested to gain from this comunity isn't recognition, but a sense of whether or not I have any potential to, well, progress.

It's a good shot, but to me it feels cut off at the bottom because the bottom of the house is right at the bottom of the frame. The image also seems a bit flat to me - have you tried playing with the contrast? So, it looks like your off to a pretty good start, but I hope you're not basing your whole photographic career plans on the feedback from just one shot.

Thatnks for the comment, I agree that the photo may apear to be cutoff on the bottom, I was attempting to keep the busy intersection out of the shot. I haven't touched this pic since I took it, never thought to adjust the Brightness or Contrast but will play around with those levels now, see what happens.

I also took shots from different angles showing the full height of the two buildings next to the church, but felt that the detail in the church was lost and washed out. Also I felt that the trees in this shot framed this photo happily

Did you do the conversion to B&W in post-processing? If so, I'd be interested in re-processing this a little differently -- the foreground building (church?) seems really ghostly. When I look at the photo, I feel like I'm seeing a photo negative of the scene. More contrast might help.

Ok, here we go:

Camera: Canon point and shoot (can't remember cuz it got destroyed by my ex)
Settings: Took the shot in B&W in camera, it was never edited as I never had editing software.
Location: As bes as I can recall it was shot in Ney York, I believe from the same harbor you can catch the ferry to Ellis Island.

um, think that's about all the info I can put out there, my apologeze if my post ruffled some feathers. I am new to the comunity, and I did go over the guidelines prior to posting, and felt I had included as much information about his photo as I could in the first posting. I do appreciate the feedback I've received already, and will try my hand at adjusting some of the levels when I have the opportunity. Im afraid to say but I know practically nothing about post processing, so if anyone here can also drop a bone on that topic, like what can be done to alter the effect of this photo, that would be amazingly helpful.

Again, thank you all in advance.
