Default Black and white

Hi Everyone. I've just joined and am looking for your opinion. I've only very recently (weeks ago) taken up photography and at the moment I'm using a finepix s1730 I don't supose it's the greatest camera in the world, but I'll use it until i get more advanced before splashing out on a good one. Though what is a good one. Anyway I really like the black and white option of the camera. I took this pic yesterday and would like your views on how i could have set the scene up and the camera. What post work should i have done. Thank in advance.

Jim

My only critique would be to straighten that river so it flows straight away from the viewer instead of off to the left.

Otherwise, fantastic shot. I love it.

First we need to know how YOU set up your camera. Can you post your exif info so we know what your original camera settings were?

Good shot for a beginner. I don't see many beginners experimenting with B&W. I like the shot - my only criticism is that my eye wants to follow the creek, but that bush on the left is blocking the view.

I agree with the bush blocking the view but I think its good overall. I like the tones and contrast and see you followed the rule of thirds with the horizon which is something I forget as I'm a beginner too.

It would be intersting to see how this may have turned out had you taken it with a 16:9 ratio.

I agree, I found myself tilting my head to see what was round the corner.
Thank you for your comment.

Nice photo, but those bushes were just a little much. Keep up the experimenting.
