Hi there! Do a quick review of the critique forum rules. We need a bit more information...EXIF data, specific question, etc.
Thanks!

Being new to photography I'm really impressed...love the subject, the tones, and the lines (fence, road). I think maybe that this would be more successful as a horizontal (landscape) orientation...the fence and road lead the eyes off the image and the vertical crop kind of cuts it off. Still a great image and subject overall.

Thanks for letting me know! I'm also very new to this website and still don't know how to work around on it yet, so I'm still learning. I'm going to sound like an idiot for asking this, but like I said, I'm new. So what exactly is EXIF data?
I took this photo using a Canon EOS 20d which I just got a few weeks ago. I'm still learning it and have a lot more to discover about it. I snapped about five shots of the barn using the Auto setting and different angles. I used Picnik to edit the photo in which I applied Lomo-ish and adjusted the effect. I also applied Cross Process and adjusted it's effect to a lower tone. This is the only one I shot using a portrait view and I thought it looked very interesting, but I'm not so sure. Do you think the fence takes away from the overall view of the barn? Also, do you think it would have a nicer effect if it was in black and white? Last edited by DixiePics; 11-22-2010 at 05:04 PM. |

EXIF data is the settings used to take the shot...shutter speed, ISO, aperture, etc. It's embedded in your image file. You can access it from many programs including Photoshop or editing software that came with your camera. You should also be able to look at it by right-clicking on the image and selecting Properties I believe.
I like your composition. It might actually look better in landscape orientation versus portrait. Most landscapes look better in landscape orientation...thus the name. I don't think converting to B&W will enhance the image. It looks great in color.

Welcome to DPS. That's a great shot for a beginner! I like the different colors and textures that lead up to the barn. My suggestions for improvement would be: 1) Take the shot from a little higher angle so the fence doesn't block part of the barn and 2) Fix the white balance/color issue. I don't know what you did in post processing, but the sky has a strange color and the colors can use some more "pop."

Compositionally, the road leads my eye away from the barn, not toward it.

Great barn! Is it a convenient setting for you? If I were you, I would work that one over pretty good experimenting with different camera settings and different angles. Put a little glitter on it and I could see it as a Christmas card.
