Default Winter Night shot

Just got a canon t2i (moving up from a point-and-shoot) and this is the first night shot I have taken, so I figured I'd post it here to see how I did and how I can do better. I kept the aperture small to try to get both the trees and bushes in focus, but perhaps that wasn't the best choice? The only editing I did (other than resizing) is adjusting the white balance. Thanks

ISO: 100
Shutter: 30 seconds
Aperture: 9
Focal Length: 28mm

Welcome to DPS.

It is a nice first try for night shot. Perhaps the use of a remote could be helpfull here. It would prevent the little motion blurr and also be usefull for you to get a longer exposure in bulb mode.

Hi there -

I might also suggest having a very clear and engaging subject. IMHO, the whole frame should be captivating, yet lead your eye to a definable subject.

I'll have to pick one up and give it a try. I used the self-timer on this shot so in theory my pressing of the shutter button shouldn't have had an effect, but perhaps my tripod simply isn't strong enough and vibrated for a while. Or maybe the ground wasn't steady :-)

So in a scene like this, perhaps if I found an angle that made the tree stand out more? Maybe if I put the tree slightly off to one side, with the rows of bushes coming towards you, one on each side? Thanks for the feedback.
