Default Marina in the mist

While on vacation on the Northern California coast, I shot this picture at the local marina. I can't decide if I like it or not and was wondering if I could get a few tips or tricks on how to improve it.

I think I would like the seagull a lot better if it wasn't blurry and facing away from the boats. As it is, there's a lot of empty space between him and the boats.

That said, I think this was a great opportunity. Crop out the left third of the photograph, and I think you have a reasonably interesting shot. I hope you don't mind, but I took the liberty of playing around with it to see what I could do with it. Here's one idea:

to me it looks like two separate shots. Both could be very interesting shots but they are combined with some dead space in the center (the water) and so it makes my eye wander back and forth I'm not sure what to focus on.
