Default Forest Folk

This is my very very first time at this
I have just got my first DSLR (Nikon D90) and am still very much a beginner.
I understand that this shot was possibly way to advanced for me to handle (poor exposure etc) but I could not resist a little try.
Any advise on how I could have done this better would be great.
Thank you

I'm a beginner too, but I love this pic! I like how your subject stood right in the sunlight. I also like the texture of the trees and all. Thanks for sharing!

Can you post your EXIF data? It will be easier to offer suggestions if the settings that you used are known.

It's tough to make a shot look good when you have both bright sunlight and deep shade like you have here. The two just don't play together nicely on camera sensors.

I like the concept and composition. There seems to be a focus issue, though, as the person in the shot is not sharp. You may have to focus lock on the subject then recompose the shot. The composition might be better if you used the path to lead the viewer's eye to the subject, but it's not bad as it is. They dynamic range in this shot is greater than your camera can handle, so this might be an HDR candidate. A good start for a beginner, though.
