Default trying new things

This is an attempt to get an atmospheric shot looking out of a valley in North Wales. I'm quite new to using DSLR and was just trying out using a flash at dusk to pick out near detail . I don't have photo shop for post production . Most of the time I just experiment with the different settings . Any advise would be very welcome.

EXIF details:
Camera Canon EOS 1000D
Exposure 0.017 sec (1/60)
Aperture f/10.0
Focal Length 18 mm
ISO Speed 400
Exposure Bias 0 EV
Flash On, Fired

Hello Nathan welcome to DPS. By the way, I could not see your image in your post.

Very nice view. It must be an opportunity to be there, loads of things to shoot. Lovely shot, dramatic sky. What time of the day did you take it? Foreground is a bit underexpose, but you can experiment again by adjusting the exposure and leave the aperture as is to cover good depth of field. Flash i think will be useless in boosting its exposure as it cannot reach a certain distances. So, maybe you can play with ISO and shutter speed. It is also good to use a tripod just in case you lower the shutter speed down. Just my two cents...Goodluck, looking forward for more images from you.

it was after sunset looking away from the west. the mountains obstructed the sun . i used a tripod but was affraid to have a longer exposure in case the sky became to light to see the blue and orenge contrasts. Obviously if i had photo shop and knew how to use it i could get round that problem .

The flash was just for the nearest area . looks like it sort of worked to pick out the near grass turfts but other than that it was useless.
