I'm new to SLR photography and am trying to learn how to take more interesting photos (than I used to with my Point & Shoot).

One of my first landscape photos ...

I'm not sure I like the dark field in the foreground.
Should I have been higher to remove the emphasis away from this?
I've read comments that you should aim to have something in the foreground when taking Landscape photos.

When possible it is best to position yourself in a way that might avoid all the overhead utility lines. Something very distracting about those things and they sort of say something.

Overall it is a nice shot that could use a little contrast and increased saturation. My eyes are drawn toward the windmill and I would like to see some closer shots of that.

I would have shot this not at the field level for two reasons:
1) as you said, the dark foreground is a bit distracting
2) Too much of sky and the utility lines

Also, try the same shot a bit closer to the windmill and try to put the houses next to the mill into the frame.
