Default Street Photography

This is the photo I recently submitted for the Weekly Assignment “Street Photography”. I would like to know what is wrong with the picture. And what does it take to win a Weekly Assignment?

What do you like about the photo?

If your focal point is the band, you sure picked an odd vantage point. If it is about the people standing along the sidewalk, then I would wonder why.

Nice idea.

I would say a tighter crop and image adjustment. It seems very blue or is that the idea?

+1 on the tighter crop.

Hello EKTipton,

My two cents: I'd slightly change the color temperature to make it look warmer. There's a bit too strong blueish cast, like Photologyst pointed out...

Cropping will improve it as well, by removing the distracting elements and centering the viewers' attention to the band. Use the rule of thirds or other composition techniques in order to determine how to crop it.

Greetings

The photo was taken at 7:45pm and location is Main Street of a small town and not very wide. I wonder if I should have tried using a flash.

You might have been better off honing in on the band as the main subject, or, on the other hand, honing in on the audience alone. The photo doesn't have a distinct point of interest, and it seems to need one.

I was trying to show a street scene where a Blues Band was playing with people on the street listening and watching at dusk with the lights of the bars.

I had walked up Main Street from a parking lot about a quarter a mile away and had just my camera and a 28mm – 135mm zoom lens. I am handicapped and it is hard for me to carry a lot of equipment. But hopefully I have remedied the problem. I bought a folding two wheel cart at Office Depot that I should be able use to carry my equipment.

It is pretty tough to get one photograph that will convey what you were seeing and feeling at the event. Probably better to find something within the whole that is visually interesting and suggests a bigger story. That might have been a tight shot of the microphone, the guy in the neon blue suit with a shallow DOF, a lone cable leading up to a single instrument or using the faces of the onlookers as a leading line. Hard to say without actually being there.

There are many possibilities with a scene like this that might take a little experimentation. Right now, you have a snapshot of a band in the middle of the street and it has a few exposure issues.

I have a picture of the singer like you mentioned on Flicker here is a link to the picture.
Thanks for all the suggestions. I just started photographing people. I have been kind of reluctant to take pictures of people in the past. You never know how they will react.
