Default Day and night shots

Hi all. First of all I'd like to mention this is the second day I am using my Canon EOS 450D/Rebel Xsi camera. I am quite new to digital photography or photography at all. I like it but never really got around to it. I did some research and trying to get as good results as I can get but having suggestions from people who have been doing it for a while helps the most in my opinion.

The below picture is the view from my home at night time. I had taken this shot without a tripod, didn't get a chance to buy one yet, therefore I couldn't get the angle I wanted. Also the distance to the marina is rather huge at least 500 meters or more. This was taken at fully manual mode. Again any tips would be greatly appreciated.

While uploading the pictures to flickr it compresses them and I lose quality quite a bit. If anybody would like to see them full sized I'd be happy to e-mail them to you as I would appreciate as much suggestions as I can. I am still reading up on photography articles and watching workshop videos to improve myself.
