The second is my favorite, the only thing I would say is crop out 2/3s of the sky, IMO it would make this a stronger photo.

The first shot is pretty nice, but it needs something else to give it more interest. As is, the tree is acting as a great potential background, but it needs an additional subject element to really draw the eye into the frame. It needs a target to focus on and return to as it explores the rest of the frame. Preferably, this would be something brightly colored, red or yellow, like a bird or a lone patch of remaining leaves.
The second shot is not quite sharp. It also needs a compelling subject matter to play off the background. As you shoot, look for relationships that can help lead the eye around, tell a story and give your shots a sense of place.

I agree that more compelling subjects would add to each image. In the first one, I also keep wanting to see the branches that are cut off on the sides of the picture, as it feels like the tree is incomplete. This may have not been possible if other trees were next to it, though. The second one is not bad, but would benefit from a compelling subject that draws the eye. Too bad the sun was covered by the clouds, as that could have been your subject. You may want to shoot at a smaller aperture to increase your DOF also.
