For detail in the moon, always underexpose it. Of course, that will probably leave the rest as silhouettes. As for getting the detail in the trees and houses, you may have to do multimple exposures.

Your shutter speed is way way way too slow to capture any details in the moon.
The other settings look good, but I have only been able to get details with 1/50 second or faster. Other wise you get that big glowing ball that looks more like the sun. Of course, then you get nothing but blackness for the rest of the scene. |

I don't see a picture but I also spent time trying to learn how to shoot the moon. Check this out: How I shoot the moon..
Manual focus, f/11 ish and about 1/200 seemed to be good settings for me and take a lot of shots. |

This is a shot I took of the Harvest Moon a couple of mornings after it reached its peak.
![]() Exposure 0.011 sec (1/90) Aperture f/16.0 ISO Speed 100 Since the sky is usually so dark against a bright moon, people instinctively think it needs to be taken with a slow shutter speed. In fact, it is a very bright source of light and needs to be treated as such. So far I have found that the more detail I want in the foreground; the more detail I have to sacrifice with the moon's surface. Bracketing some shots might work, but you will still have to deal with a pretty large and bright glow from the overexposed moon. Kind of fun to keep working with it though. lol |

Fabulous shot Michael!
Thanks for all the comments! I shot the moon at a much faster shutter and also shot several different exposures, then I took out the blown out moon and replaced it with the better exposed moon. This is the result.

Surreal is a good word for it! This is the view from my deck and I was amazed at how BIG the moon looked when it rose over my neighbors house. I've seen many a moon rise here, but never one like this!
