Default River boat rite on the Ganges, Kolkata

This is a picture of the Vidyasagar Setu (the second Howrah Bridge) over the river Ganges. I had to shoot this by hand as I didnt have a tripod with me and even if I did, there was hardly any space to place it there. This is why I had to bump up the ISO upto 1600. I would have preferred to have the boat somewhere on one side of the image (to satisfy the rule of thirds maybe) but there were too many other things I was trying to avoid (like people and other boats). This is what I ended up with. Does it work overall? Is the tone suitable for this sort of picture?

River boat ride on the Ganges

Exposure 0.125 sec (1/8)
Aperture f/5.0

Thanks for looking!

I think overall it is a nice shot, cannot see any noise and the clarity is pretty good. Love the expanse of the bridge it would have been nice to see all of it but still I think it is a good shot.

Thank you so much John! Unfortunately, I barely had any space to stand at all. I was infact looking for a spot where I would be able to get the whole length of the bridge but I wasnt able to

Avishek, great shot. Love the Calcutta sky these days in monsoon...Also your high ISO noise is not very apparent in the image, so I'd say not bad at all. Besides I think your placement of the boat in the frame is very well executed both in terms of composition and directionality of the boat.

It appears that you have created this pictrue from a ferry as your eye-level is much higher than the water level and the boat. As fellow citizen of Calcutta, I understand your predicament, as I have tried exactly the same from ferry, its quite a pain managing balance-camera-boat angle etc. etc. You should try taking a rowboat on hire from Prinsep Ghat (they charge about 250 Rs for half hr ride)...it may give you some great photo opportunities at dawn/dusk. You can ask them to row to your convenient perspective too..Those guys start at 5.30 am. These are some pictures i made at the very same place in July...to get the shot I really wanted (titled "Majhi and sunset" here, i nearly reached the end of my half hour!!), am planning to do it soon again though..

Explosion of clouds

In any case, I think the gold colour in your picture has come out very nicely, try a crop by leaving out that bright white halogen light which forms a bit of a distracting blob on your horizon.

Great work. Keep shooting.

Cheers

Thank you for your comments Saptarshi. I actually didnt shoot this off of a ferry. This was shot from near one of banks on side where people get onto the boats. Next time I am going to try and shoot from one of the boats. Hopefully I will get some better shots and more of the bridge in the shot.

I was a little upset about that halogen light getting into the frame of my shot. I thought of cropping it out but the problem was that the aspect ratio of the picture was ending up quiet weird, so I thought against it. I did however use an adjustment brush over that part to try and reduce the saturation and exposure in that area.

You have some really great shots in your set. Thanks again for your comments!
