Default Broadcast

I am a newbie and would very much like to have your critique on my photo "Broadcast". Your critique would let me understand and learn from my mistake that I have made.

I have took this picture during the night with the below digital Camera. I would like to know whether my camera setting is correct? Is the color shown on the photo is alright? What are the things that I should take precaution when shooting in the night? Your advice is very important to me. Thanks.

Camera Canon EOS 550D
Focal Length - 165.0 mm
ISO - 100
Aperture - f10.0
Shutter Speed: 32secs
Manual shooting(without flash)

Regards
Richard Lim

In the guidelines are certain criteria you need to know to post in the critique section. You'll need to include info in your posts that you may have overlooked. Please take a look at them and edit your post.
Thanks a million!

Did you use a tripod when you shot this?
I'd consider cropping out the area behind the satellite. Use the rule of thirds to place your main subjects on those lines and it will help you to keep balance in your photos.

Hi Richard,

This is an interesting image. I really like the reflections.

32 seconds is a really long shutter speed. If I had taken this image, I would have increased the ISO maybe to 400, which would give a shutter speed of about 8 seconds, still really long, but better.

Yes. I think the color is fine.

This is a good question and one that lots of people have written about. I would look around this site and the web and you'll find lots of advice for shooting at night.

My quick advice would be this: 1) Shoot earlier. The sky is completely black. If you shoot around the time that the sun is setting you should be able to get some color in the sky which I think is more interesting. 2) This image is a little blurry. I wasn't there so I can't say why, but I would make sure to use a tripod and a shutter release, lock the mirror up before taking the image, and get as short of an exposure as possible (by increasing the ISO). All of those things should help make the image sharper.

I hope that helps.

Hi Michelle,

Noted with thanks.
I did use a tripod for the night shot.
