Default Waterfall - my first post for first assignment

Hi all. I am so new to photography. I really am hoping to learn a lot at this site, both about how to properly use my camera, as well as how to take better and hopefully great photos. This shot was my first attempt for the latest assignment (hosted at this website) "Water in Motion." At this point I really am not even sure what kinds of questions to ask, so any and all critique is more than welcome. Thanks in advance for viewing.

I think it is a beautiful, well executed shot. You might be posting it in the wrong section though.

Hello Neophyte, welcome to DPS.

I think that your photo is pretty good. There are things that could be done better though. For example, there is too much distracting space around your main subject, the waterfall. I would try to shoot it in a vertical frame, so that the opening at the top (the source of water) is visible, the waterfall, and a bit of water beneath the waterfall. The space on the left and right detracts attention. I think the colours of the rocks and the water are great. Experiment with different framing a bit, walk around the scene and look for other points of view maybe.
