Default Mossy trunk

Mossy trunk
Camera Canon EOS 5D Mark II
Exposure 1
Aperture f/22.0
Focal Length 51 mm
ISO Speed 100
Exposure Bias 0 EV
Flash Off, Did not fire
File Size 17 MB

I used a tripod to get the most depth of field. I like the way the light plays on the trunk. Not sure about the cropping and composition. Any comments would be appreciated.

What interesting roots! I can see why you wanted to photograph them. I understand wanting to keep as much of the trunk as possible in focus but this large f/number has resulted in the background being in focus as well. I would use photoshop (or a similar program) to add depth of field to the background. I'm not a big fan of midday dappled sun light. It looks OK but I would try shooting at other times of the day to see what the light does to your shot.

I saw a similar photograph taken of the trunk of a tree much like this one. Don't ask me where I saw it, because quiet frankly I don't remember. The camera must have been at ground level following the roots up toward the tree and then closely cropped. The colors were pretty intense. May have had an HDR treatment, but it became a piece of abstract art. You might want to experiment with various angles with this one just to see what might turn up in the end.

Otherwise, it's a nice, colorful shot and shows that you have your artistic eye open and looking for photographic opportunities.
