Looking mostly for compositional critique for this one. Should I have increased the depth of field to bring the flag more in focus? Should the sailor be moved more into the frame? Any other constructive criticism welcome.

You've done a good job of giving your subject space to "look into." I wouldn't change the comp. The depth of field is good, too. It gives just enough of the flag to add to the scene with out detracting from your subject. It's too bad that we can't see the whole flag, though.

Agreed, good composition. I would have liked it if the flag were a little bit farther out, so that we could see just a little more of the stars. But the depth of field is, I think, spot-on for this photo. It emphasizes the statue while letting us see the interesting addition of the flag. Overall, the combination tells a great little story.

I like it. If the flag was in focus, it would quickly take over the scene. As is, it starts to tell a story that is left to the viewer's imagination. In fact, it would also be interesting to see the full flag in focus with the sailor slightly blurred. Same scene, but two different messages, imo.

I may (or may not) have cropped it a little differently to eliminate where the arms start to come into the frame. That's just something you have to try, back off, look at and decide.

Removed the top of the flag pole sticking out of his head and cropped the arms out.
Any opinions on whether this looks better than the original? Thanks for any input.

I like that better. It is interesting that the lines of the flag would follow so closely with his collar and lapels.

Just for fun, I started playing around with it to look at some possible options. Not any better than yours. Just a different perspective on the same subject.
