Harbour Bridge

Hi every one. This is my first post on DPS sso i hope i am doing it right. I have been reading the forums for a while but havn't had the guts to post. So here goes...

I took this photo from Dawes Point on Sydney Harbour, looking under the bridge and through to Lunar Park. I really like it, but would appreciate any feedback you all could give me.

Camera is Nikon D3000
f stop 8
Shutter speed was 8 seconds
No flash

I think you have a great subject (bridge), but I think the lamp post in the middle is distracting as my eye just wants to focus on it. I think the lighting on the bridge is great along with the park scene.

I think it looks fantastic. I was recently in Sydney at night but had no tripod with me and my shots were very blurred. I bought a gorillapod for next time!

Yeah, my eye keeps going to the lamps. I don't know what you wanted the subject to be in this picture. If the bridge is your main subject, why is it cut off and only occupying the top third of the image? What did you want to viewer's eye to be drawn to?

For people struggling with composition issues, I like to direct them to this post - Landscapes - the Best ways to Shoot them. What to do and What not to do. Scroll down to Ken's post.

Hope that helps,

This is an interesting predicament. Beautiful scenery, well composed, well exposed, but the two lanterns kind of dominate the frame. Yet, the lanterns are interesting visually.......

I wish some of the long-term shutterbugs that frequent this forum would walk us through how they might approach this setting.

Yeah i agree it would be great to hear from some "long-term shutterbugs". I realy wanted the lines in the brick work to be coming from the corners, but wasn't able to get it without the lamps in the way. I do really like the shadows the throw on the ground though.

this is my perspective...I can see how the image was placed perfectly and all nine quadrants are laid out with conviction..the only problem I see is that,to me it looks as if your objective was chasing perfection rather than chasing the "sweet spot" that every photo craves... Mind you this is only my opinion.but you should have snapped the picture when that couple was walking hand in hand beneath the lights, rather than waiting for the all coast's clear...to me having the interferance would have balanced out the distraction created by the lamps....take it or leave it it's how i would have handled the moment.other than that i find the photo to be interesting because it is of an image I have never seen before prior to the fact.thank you
