Default First Post and Edinburgh Castle

Hello, just starting out in the DSLR world and managed to take this one today.

Ross Fountain and Edinburgh Castle on Flickr - Photo Sharing!

Canon EOS 1000
1/60
f22
ISO 800
No flash but did use a tripod

my main question is how do i go about correctly exposing the fountain, without over exposing the sky and the castle like I've done in this one? I dont like to use editing software (what i mean is i dont know how to!)

Thanks

I've you've got a bright day and you're shooting in the afternoon, sometimes it's just not possible to get the best of both worlds in terms of exposure. You could try using polariser or graduated neutral density filter, which will darken the sky for you.

It's a shame you don't like using software as this would be a perfect case for compositing. You take one shot exposed for the foreground and another shot exposed for the sky, and then put the two together. It's one of the simplest things you can do post production wise and free software like GIMP will handle it easily. There are lots of tutorials online or you can always ask here. You could even expose for the sky, compensate a little for the foreground, and then sort out the underexposure in post production. Being able to tweak your photos easily is one of the joys of digital photography!

Another problem here I think is the ISO - 800 is rather high for a daylight shot. You haven't posted your white balance setting but that can also affect things adversely. Good composition though; I love Edinburgh. How many other cities have a castle on a volcano?!?!
