wow, this is so clear and the colors are so vivid. If i were super picky, i would say the back section is a tad dark. But honestly, i dont think most people would mind it at all

Yes, a bit of fill in the shadows is certainly called for, though this is a terrific image and the improvements needed are minor. Did you do any sharpening? Looks like I bit of that might help as well.

This shot was taken at -1 EV, vivid +2 sat. with a B+W polirizer filter on a tripod. I messed with the white balance in post but can't remember what I settled on and I also adjusted the D-lighting. I didn't do anything with sharpening. Is there anything you could do to lighten up the dark shadows?

yes, do an adjustment layer and use levels or curves and then if there are any areas that got too bright all you have to do is paint them away.
If you need more help let me know!

Thanks windrider86, what you just suggested went so far over my head I'm still spinning. I need to learn more about post processing and what I would need to buy. Right now I use the program that came with my D90 called ViewNx. It only has a few manipulation options. I take my pictures in raw and that allows me to change the exposure, white balance, picture control (vivid, neutral etc.) and d-lighting. I can also use a color control. What program would allow me to do what you suggest?
