Hi! Actually, for a stand-alone cloud shot, this one isn't too bad compositionally. It would still be nice if it was incorporated with a main subject but it's not bad as it is with the rays.

There is another thread going on regarding clouds right now that might help a bit too.

jpel,

As far as cloud shots go, your image is outstanding. Those sunbeams are cool. Unfortunately, like navcom said, those type of shots usually lack something. Maybe because it's hard to get a sense of scale for reference. Perhaps if part of the sun was peeking through the clouds, it would have a more defined subject.

Most of the times when I have taken a shot with the clouds taking up about 2/3 of the image, it does not capture the grandeur of the clouds that I felt when I was there. Still working on trying to capture that sense of grandeur on a 2D image I see on my computer screen.

Thanks! Kind of thinking the same thing myself, but was overwhelmed seeing the clouds like this and getting the shot. Ahem, the only thing I had in the foreground was an outhouse, so I opted for nothing. LOL. Just what I could do at that "right" moment.
As Always, Thanks for the input. Right or Wrong, Agree or disagree........... I learn! That's why I am here. Grin

LOL... Yes, I can see you liking that. hehehe, Z. I went through alot of your stuff. Very cool. You are very talented. Thank you for comenting. Maybe I should have taken more than one pic there. Yeah, I think that is it...... more than one composite shot might have been just the right thing! Always learning!.............

jpel,

Here's an example of what I was talking about. I like this picture I took in Grand Teton NP. The main subject is the clouds, yet I still have the feeling that the clouds are not a strong enough subject. So, unless it is a sunset/sunrise, I have a hard time making a satisfying image where the clouds are the main subject. Does anyone have any tips for cloud shots?

Sorry, z0mbina, there were no outhouses to use in the foreground

I have to agree with everyone here. I just didn't have the opportunity. The clouds were almost straight up and my jaw was dropping. LOL. That's a gorgeous shot Krusty. Wish I could have been farther back to get something like that. But then, I don't know if the rays coming through would have been strong enough. Thank you all for commenting. I learn something new everyday!

Thank you for the positive feedback! No one has commented on it in Flickr, so I'm glad you like it.

navcom - I followed the link you mentioned and I did read that thread earlier, but it was good to review. I saw you have a very informative post there.

I didn't anticipate this, but when I critique others' photos, it forces me to re-evaluate why an image works or why it doesn't and I have to analyze the different aspects of the image. I think I end up learning as much as the person whose image I am reviewing.

Thanks again for the replies,
Greg
