Gritty but Serene? Any thoughts?

This is my first attempt at uploading a photo to this forum. If I get it right, that will be a miracle. lol

This is pretty much straight out of my camera with some minor cropping to eliminate clutter in the foreground. Is there any way to make it pop with post processing? Or, should I write it off to experience and look for the next shot?

Ever wonder why we almost instinctively split the frame with the horizon, when that is supposed to be so visually unappealing? Typically, I have to make a conscious effort to shift the horizon to the top or bottom third of the composition and I usually fail. What does that mean, if anything?

Your image is a bit overexposed right now. I was able to run it through ACR and lower the exposure, boost the fill light and add a bit of saturation to make significant improvements.
