Default I suffered for my art...was it worth it??

Hi everyone,

This photo was taken at sunrise in Melbourne, Victoria on a freezing cold winter morning. I'm brand new to photography and this session was my first shot with manual settings so I'm really really keen to get feedback about how I can better cordinate my ISO/shutter speed/aperture etc.

Camera: Canon 450D
AV: 5.0
TV: 1/30sec
ISO: 100
Focal Length: 43mm

Thanking you in advance,
Mandy

It's a nice pic. Are you happy with it? Then it's worth it....

I think it's a beautiful photo. Just crop some off the top so the upper horizon consumes only a third of the image.

I agree, there is a bit too much sky in the picture. With a sky as flat (few clouds) as that one, the most interesting part of the picture is what is below.

Also, I think I'd like to see this picture horizontal rather than vertical. The pier looks jammed into the image and the most dynamic part, the water, is what i want to see more of.

Mandy,
I think this one's great but still I have to agree with barrettfb that there's a bit too much sky.
I like the dramatic water!

Sure it's worth it!

Sunrise is the best time of the day and if you mnage to capture one good shot out of many, then you have done well.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I agree with the cropping, I chopped off a bit of the sky and it looks much, much better.

Braving the freezing cold weather to get this shot was definately worth it after all!

Have a great day all,
Mandy

A little cold spray is a only minor inconvenience for an active photographer.
