Exclamation Help! Does this composition work?

I just joined this forum and hopefully this, my first post works!

I took this photo during a recent visit to some ocean baths. I was trying to get a slightly "different" photo to the standard one showing the starters blocks. I can't decide whether this composition works. I would be grateful for some advice.
Thankyou in advance

Hmmm, my eye keeps being drawn along the lines of the railings to the right of the pic which is a little distracting, maybe try cropping the RH side using the first vertical post to frame that side of the pic? That way the fence should lead you into the pic rather than pull you accross to the right.

Second thoughts, that may not work due to the angles.........maybe crop just before the first upright to take out the distractions on the RH side?

Ohhh and Welcome to the forums too !

I applaud you for taking the risk by trying to incorporate a difficult element into the composition. This is often where great compositions come from as great reward grows from great risks. But in answer to your question, this particular composition is OK but falls short of being a home run. The lines created by the railings are strong compositional elements but don't take our eyes anywhere in particular and none of them is perfectly vertical. I'm thinking that at least the one closest to the camera needs to be vertical. (To your credit, the hoirzon is spot-on.) Also, as a rule, you don't want vertical elements too close to the edge of the frame as they tend to create distractions. So overall, you get an "A" for effort even if the image falls just a bit short of a masterpiece.

Default Thank you

Thank you for the considered comments. I appreciate the time you took.

I've tried various crops as suggested by Dodge and have decided that the image doesn't quite work. I agree the railings nearest the camera are too stong and don't really lead anywhere. I'm due to visit the same area in 2-3 weeks and will have another go.

Thank you again.
