Default Derelict hall landscape

Hi all

I've watched these forums from the outside for a few months, and have decided to take the plunge! Looks like a great community.

I've recently been obsessed with my shiny new super-telephoto lens and have been neglecting my love for landscapes. I dusted off the old 18-55 and took this shot of an old hall just outside Dayboro (near Brisbane, Australia).

Laceys Creek Rd

It is HDR (I'm sure HDR is taboo in the landscapes section...), but that isn't the point of this post - I feel the HDR processing was done moderately and for the (practical - not artistic) benefit of the exposure.

My main concern is that it may be a little over-saturated. Also, although the sky has a nice gradient to it, I think there's a little too much there.

I'd really appreciate your thoughts and comments!

This a good enough shot as far as it goes. It doesn't look too extreme in saturation but the major issue for me is that I would have liked to have seen more derelict hall and less landscape

The direction of the sun lights up the grassland but leaves all but the roof of the hall in shade.

So a couple of things might have helped; take the photo at another time of day so we can see more of the hall and/or get closer, either by zooming in with your trusty lens or by using nature's zoom - your feet.

Hope you find this useful.

Thanks for your feedback!

I agree that the lighting was not in favour of the hall - hence the HDR. The sun was starting to set out to the right of the frame, as you can see. Perhaps early morning would give better lighting to this side of the hall - I must try it.

You also are quite right in saying that the building should be the feature. Actually, I can see it being less of a "minor feature in a landscape" and more of a context for a portrait shoot. I guess it's time to brave the hillbilly farmer

Thanks again!
