Default Cemetary Road

DPS Assignment: "Cemeteries"
Feels like something is missing. Too dark? Any ideas?

No, I don't think it's too dark; the tonal range you captured is actually I think pretty good given what you had to work with. Nice sunburst too. If there's a problem with the photo, I think its the composition. The road leads your eye somewhere, but at the end there's nothing there to see. The title of the photo makes the eye want to look at a cemetery, but you only provide a tease on either side of the road with nothing substantial to finally rest your eye on. You might have moved to the left and swung your camera a bit to the right to capture both the road and more of the cemetery. By the position of the sun, it looks like you then would have captured a lot of nice front-lit gravestones, which perhaps would have been interesting as subjects and a nice lighting effect. Thanks for sharing and Happy Shooting!

Cheezeman is right, The road pulls your eye along, but doesn't end up anywhere important. You can't really change this, but this composition would be more effective if there was a bend in the road because then your brain would get curious about what's around the bend. Since you have a straight road, I would take a slightly different angle so that the road leads to one side of the photo. I also think the lighting and tonal range are very good. I would love to see an update!

i agree with both of them but to add to ben holder, since you have a straight road and not curved, you could maybe wait for someone to walk down the path to take the picture, maybe that will look better? i'm just imagining...

I agree with the others, the road kind of leads to know where. I wonder if you got lower, and changed the angle, if you could get the two paths to look like they came to a point at the end. Or maybe if you had something in focus up front, and played with the depth of field a bit, make it a bit more shallow? I do love the sun though, that came out really nice!

I agree with jillmp13. The sun is spectacular! Did you use a filter or anything?

Nope, no filters or anything. I did try several angles. I actually started at the other end but didn't like the results so i went for a walk and looked back and loved what i saw. This seemed to be the best one out of 20 or 30 shots. Thanks for all the input!!!!
