Default Beach Grass and Fence

Beach Grass

Camera: Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT
Exposure: 0.003 sec (1/320)
Aperture: f/7.1
Focal Length: 50 mm
ISO Speed: 100

I was at the beach hanging with my friends and I had my camera along. As we were leaving I saw this and dropped all my stuff and went belly down to the sand to take this.

I cropped a bit off the bottom and side, and processed it, but it's still missing something.
Nothing to focus attention? Over processed and too dark? Somewhere that day there was a great shoot but I couldn't find it.

I don't think you have really exploited the patterns available. My immediate inclination would be to get closer and take the shot from higher up so you would have three roughly even bands across the image:

1. Grass

2. Fence

3. Shadow

That would bring out the rhythm of the patterns. It isn't the only approach but I think you need to seek something that lifts it above just being a shot of a fence on a beach.

I do see what you were trying to capture. Personally I think the biggest problem is that there is very little contrast between the grass and the fence to distinguish them where they cross (if you made this B&W you probably wouldn't be able to see the fence in that part). This kind of leads to not knowing exactly where to focus. I think a different time of day would help this photo a lot, and as Wolf said, Taking it from a slightly higher vantage point would make each pattern in the photo more distinct. If it isn't too far away, I would go back and try again. It can't hurt .

I knew there was lack of contrast somewhere, but I couldn't put my finger on it. I was thinking the sky could be a deeper blue, but its def the fence, gets kind of lost in that grass. Also, if you took this when the sun was a bit lower, maybe the shadows would have been more dramatic...depending on how it was setting. maybe you'd get more shadows in the sand as well.
