I give people a hard time about HDR images because, frankly, most of them stink. As Gary Fong would say, "There are easier ways to get an image that looks like a cheap intaglio print." However, there are times when the technique is called for and I ran into one today.
I was in St. Augustine, a city that predates the signing of our Declaration of Independence by nearly two hundred years. I stopped by what is now Flagler College (used to be Flagler Hotel) with its extravagant architecture and atrium. On the way out I noticed the wonderful gate in front and looked for a way to get both the gate and the building across the atrium in the same shot. Normally, this would have exceeded the capabilities of my camera's sensor but by using the best of three different exposures I was able to get detail in all the different parts. So here's your chance. Make fun of me while you can, I'm still going to tell you how lousy your over-processed HDR are,,,that is, if it is lousy and overprocessed.
