Default Favorite Sunset

This is one of the favorite pictures i have taken. Im looking for any advice on how to improve it. Should i have zoomed/crop it to take out some of the water and sky from the top and bottom. If anyone would like to look thru my flickr i would also like some suggestions of how to take better sunset pictures.

Your composition is not too bad but the sun is quite far away and the colors are not quite there. Overall not bad though.

Couple tips...

Use a smaller aperture, something in the f/8 to f/13 range. You get the best depth of field and thus more of the image will be sharper.

Use the lowest ISO you can.

Use a tripod...always...unless there is absolutely no way you can.

Remember that a pretty sunset alone does not necessarily make a good picture. You need something else in the shot as the focal point. Let the sunset and it's colors enhance your subject. This is usually the best combination for a good sunset photo. Yours is not too bad.

Use the rule of thirds. It's not a definite rule, but it's usually a good place to start when you are new at landscape photography.

Hope that helps!

Nice composition. Like to add a little something.. The smaller aperture leads to slower shutter speed and creates a nice movement blurr of the water . Also the right side a bit dark.. maybe some dodge and burn might help..(I got this tip in dps myself.)
