Default Burned Out

I am looking for some opinions on this.

Does it cause you to stop and ponder, or is it just another B&W?

Do you think it's too dark?

What is your overall feeling?

IMO i'd like to see more of the expanse to the right of the shot with the tree on the left without so much of the other trees tot he left of that. the focus shoud really be on that object and the wonderful landscape it looks over.

The processing looks fine on my works monitor (not calibrated, unfortunately) and I can see the details.

My only concern is the sky has little detail and is blown, not only meaning there is little detail but it also affects the outline of the hill behind it.

I'm not sure it can fixed, unless you had a tripod and took different exposures.

There's certainly potential here and these are just my opinions, not saying i'm right or anything!

I think I'm with Kev, I want to see more of the vista out to the right.

The shot certainly isn't too dark - I think if you pulled the exposure back a 1/3, even 2/3 you would gain some more definition between the hill in the background and the sky.

You might lose the detail in the trunk of the foreground tree if you go this route, the alternative is to apply a gradND or some judicious dodging and burning in PP.

I think this shot would be awesome as a 4 shot pano so you could include all of the tree in the foreground(with some sky) and some more of the view to the right. It's really easy to do if you have photoshop.

I also agree the exposure of the sky needs to be lowered.

I have just noticed that you used an ISO of 640, which is very high considering how bright it prob was that day.

i always use ISO 100-200 for this kind of shot.

But he's at 1/100, ISO of 640 won't generate much noise on a D90.

Thanks all, I really appreciate the feedback.

I will have to try some of the suggestions.

To be honest, the day was horrible for lighting. There were low clouds, thus the blown out mountain, and the clouds were thick, thus the lack of detail in the sky. A mile down the road behind me is a snow storm.

Great idea! I will have to go back and try this. As I never really thought of it at the time for some reason.

Another great idea, I have been wanting to play with this kind of stuff.

Thank you again, I really appreciate ALL of your input.

Thank you for the compliment. The sky was working against me that day, and the very low cloud level left the sky appearing washed out. However, with the comments I have received, I am thinking about making another trip for an attempt this weekend.

Thanks again,

Divot
