Default Fire one the water

I know I violated the rule of thirds and I am trying to work on that. My question is, how would I have done it more sky less water? Visa- Versa? Is there a way to know or what?? Thanks

Some rules are meant to be broken! I do like it as it is but if you were going to go one way or the other, I would say that the sky deserves to have more presence than the water.

Thanks Steve I guess my mind is wired in a way that when I cant deside I devide and in most cases its equal. Thanks for your advice.

One of the most compelling features of this image is the way the pattern of the waves mirrors the pattern of the clouds. This is a powerful compositional device and when you add that to the dramatic light and color and you have a well composed image, but for the fact that the strong line down the middle divides into two separate images instead of a unified whole.

I know it can be a struggle to decide which of the two to reduce to move the horizon line. Certainly you do not want to shoot this at an angle (tilted horizons make us seasick.) However, you could turn your camera 90 degrees and turn this to portrait mode which would give you more room in which to work.

Thanks Lee that is the kind of advice I was looking for I never would have thought of that since at the time I was wishing for a wide angle lens. But as you suggest there is just as much to behold on the top and the bottom as well. Thanks again

I remembered the old days trying various theorems to solve a Geometry problem. Similarly, the Rule of Thirds is just one of the many useful techniques. We don't have to break it or using it at all.
