I don't usually take non-people shots, I love capturing faces, but I thought I should start expanding my photography, so I went to the beach and shot this. Does the composition work? The b/w? The overall exposure? Are the highlights in the water bothersome?

This works really well for me (inexpert amateur that I am). The highlights in the water are fine and actually help with the contrast of the little group in the distance. The composition seems great too -- you've captured the wide open space nicely. My only thought is what it would have looked like in colour... cards on the table: I'm not the biggest fan of black-and-white conversions, but that said this could work really well with a good contrast between the yellow of the sand and the azure blue of the sky. But hey, this is a shot to be proud of. Nice work.
