Default Vinales Panorama

Vinales Pano 2.jpg

17mm
f/16
1/30
Manual
Circular polarizer used

I like the amount of detail in this photo and the colour ... but the difference in the brightness from left to right is disturbing me. I guess I could just crop out either the light or the dark side (or start the panorama again using fewer photos)... but would like to know if there are any other suggestions on how to handle this. This was shot in the middle of the day - I had no choice as I was on a tour bus with just a 10 minute stop to take some photos!!

Some of that dark-light issues may be due to your circular polarizer. A CP has it's greatest effect when it's used 90 degrees to the sun. As you depart from 90 degrees, it's effect changes. This will become very evident in a panorama, which by definition is a wider slice of the terrain.

Looking at your photo, I'm going to guess the sun was over your left shoulder when you were taking the left-most portion of your image. It appears that is where the CP had it's most effect. I'm guessing the sun was high but not directly overhead. If it were directly overhead, you would always be 90 degrees to the sign regardless of which direction you were shooting and the sky would be fairly uniform. In your photo, the left portion of the sky looks more effected by the CP than the right portion of the sky.

Hope that helps!

Navcom - thanks, that makes sense to me and I will keep it in mind for next time (not that I'll be back in Cuba to take this shot again probably!). I didn't think about the effect the polariser would have as I moved through the sequence of shots.

Peeperita - yes please! Always really interested to see how I can 'fix' things in post. I use PSE but am not very skilled at it yet.

here ya go....

Vinales%20Pano%202

a very quick edit.....no more than five minutes spent on it and i am sure that more could be done......basically, i made a selection of the left side of the image on a new layer by using a linear gradient with the quick mask sset to screen......i used the gradient to create the selection so that the "patch" would blend in......

it helped with the darkness quite a bit and i would think if i went further with an additional selection it would lighten that bottom corner even more....

Wow - totally different photograph. I'm convinced it will take me more than 5 minutes, but I'll have a go at following what you did.

Your help is much appreciated, Peeperita.
