Default View from my office window

Hello,
I took this shot a few weeks back and I have really come to like it. However I have only been composing (rather then just snapping freely) photos for a few months now and really want to get some solid feedback. As this is a view I see every day I have the chance to re-shoot again and again until it is just right. Any feedback is welcome.

Office View

Camera: Nikon D40
Exposure: 0.02 sec (1/50)
Aperture: f/5.0
Focal Length: 122 mm
ISO Speed: 800
Flash: No Flash

iphoto editing: slight increased saturation, brightness and colour boost

i have to say its.. well at first not what i expected. but...
the pipe in the middle throws off to me... it divides this instead of giving the eye something to look "at"... as its drawing the eye to the pipe

the colors are neat and i would say maybe taking while there is more light out there, as appears almost too overcast

keep shooting...
but.. also, if YOU are happy with it, be happy with it!

thanks for sharing!

I agree with super dan in one respect.....try recomposing the pipe to a different place....the shot feels a bit heavy to the left side and very light on the right...the pipe forces one to divide into right and left....I am thinking that I might back away a little and get the pipe more to the right side lending some weight to that side and get more plain wall around that large window to lighten it some and get some image balance......You are onto a great photographic idea though

The problem is not the pipe or it's placement exactly. It is that you have three very strong focal points to the image but the pipe is the strongest so your eye hunts around quite a bit.

You need to decide "what" the subject is of the photo, and there can only be one primary subject. If it is the "grouping, then probably frame a little looser.

Thanks for the advice so far, really helpful. I'm going to hopefully have another crack at it tomorrow morning, however the pigeons aren't hanging out in that hole recently. I'll see what I can do. will re-post if I get a chance at the shot.

Cheers

Joe

I really like the photo but there was something throwing me off. I think that sk66 has managed to vocabularise what I was thinking.

having said that I have to say that I really love the texture

I'm going to go against the grain and say that I think this composition is a successful rule breaker. Normally I'd agree that the pipe should be moved off- center. But I feel it works in this case becasue of the assymetrical, but balanced elements on either side. I say balanced only because the pigeons are present. Their living forms, although relatively small, balance the static window on the other side. IMO, without the pigeons this shot wouldn't work at all.
