Default Coastal Living

I was down at the coast this weekend and went out to take some pictures along the Intercoastal Waterway. I've been wanting to get a shot down the row of houses and docks. Well I was only able to stay out there a few minutes cause it was cold on the bridge and I left my jacket back at the house. So I snapped about 10 shots and left.

This isn't exactly the shot I wanted, but I can't decide if I really like it or not. First off, I don;t think there is enough definiton or contrast in the water. I'm thinking it blends too much with the sky. The trees being so much darker than everything else bugs me too. I guess overall I look at it as just an average image. No real emotion or depth to it. Am I just being too critical of myself? What do you guys think? Do you like it?

I actually think that the composition is quite good with the rows of houses along the shore.

I do agree with you about the water, not having enough contrast and seems to blend together with the sky.

I also think the shot would have been better if it was in colour. Maybe having some colour will make the trees look more defined and have more texture overall.

Composition-wise, I think you did well. But this photo lacks the story/visual appeal that will make me stare at it longer. Do you still have the colored version of this shot?

Cheers!

Hi, I believe there is "too much sky" in it, also agree with previous posts about it should look better in colors. All in all, you are being too harsh on yourself jeje it is a good pic!

Try shooting very early or late in the day. The elongated shadows will give you contrast. It will also help separate your water from your sky.

Agree with all here, color and time of day would make a difference. Very overcast, maybe try it again (if you can) with a sunrise? or pehaps with some more sun on the water (but not reflecting). Either would likely solve your concerns with the trees and water.

I would chop that hotel high rise out of the right side, maybe pull left just a little, but otherwise very good composition with great keeper potential.

Don't bash yourself too hard! You should see what I take, and keep (and like)! Sorry...this photo is fine.

Thanks for all the comments. It was overcast when I was out. It was the only time I had though. I'll play with the crop a bit and see what I can turn up

Ok... So I cropped out the hotel and some of the sky. I attempted to add a bit of color to the water and sky. I am still learning PS though, so I'm thinking maybe it's a bit saturated and unnatural looking. What do you guys think of this version?

Here is my attempt at some pp on your photograph (hope you dont mind). I have used lightroom for the editting. I cropped the pic to better satisfy the rule of thirds. Also, I increased the saturation a bit and sharpened it slightly.

i don't mind at all. I'm not too far off from what you have there.
