Default MENTORING GROUP: Have a go at this please

I have chosen this image because it is literally one minute drive away and I can re-shoot it if your comments suggest it. It was taken with my Samsung 730L P&S and the only EXIF I have is :- Tv 1/125, Av 7.7, and ISO 80.

Glossop Woodhead Link road

I cloned out a couple of road signs, enhanced colour and adjusted contrast a little. It is a jpeg. Let me know if you need any more info. I presume we use our scoring system to start off?

This is a beautifull scenery but there are a few things i would change. There is a big shadow with some debri bottom centere that i find distracting so maybe taking a few steps forward on your next shoot would be nice. I don't like the road entering on the right and just ending there. I would try a different view point to have the road leading into the shot. Try on the right side of the road and go up on the hill maybe you will get he twist and bend of the road leading into your shot.

Thanks Martin. Notes taken. When I get all comments in I will go back out and mess around

I can't tell what the point of focus (subject) is. It looks like you wanted to use the wall as a "leading line" but that caused the inclusion of the road. The road is too "heavy" and demands too much attention, but doesn't seem to be the "subject".

Including more of the road as additional leading lines could work and give the impression of "beautiful scenery for a weekend drive". Leaving it out would be "beautiful scenery".

I think from this position the leading lines are pulling the eye out of the image. Maybe there's another bend where they curve into the image? Maybe try from the other side of the wall in order to leave the road out.

I too find the shadow very distracting. Also you might want to try it with a circular polarizer next time.

Thanks SK, this is cram full of good stuff that I can learn from. This is the same spot with a little more road as you suggest. Dofferent time of the year and just rained, but composition wise, what do you think.

The road to clear skies

Thank you Kirb for your comments. A polarising filter is next on my shopping list.

I think it is a gorgeous shot. The shadow on the rock wall is distracting for me, however. Beautiful! The second B&W shot is very nice. I love it.

Black lines denote leading lines--good.

Red circles are the brightest areas and our eyes tend to stay with them. Too many and in random work against you in this case.

The b&w photo is much better where a single bright spot is at the end and the rest leads to it.

Color 2/10, B&W 4/10 where 6/10 is great, 8/10 is awesome and 10/10 is masterpiece.

Just my 2 cents.

Composition wise, much better. Not a great B/W image because it's a bit "flat", but it has much better basics... I think it might even be a little better with the leading lines centered.
