Processing

• 3 x RAW exposures (-2, 0, +2) taken handheld
• Shots imported into Lightroom 2, Keywords added
• The 3 exposures exported into Photomatix Pro 3
• 3 exposures tonemapped to create the new HDR version
• Single HDR exposure exported back into Lightroom
• Within Lightroom, Shot cropped to improve the composition
• Recovery increased to bring out some more detail in the sky
• Fill Light increased
• Contrast and Clarity increased
• Saturation increased for both Green and Blue
• Exported into Photoshop as a TIFF
• Within Photoshop, Image resized to a smaller size (more suitable for the web)
• Small amount of Smart Sharpen applied
• Exported as a JPG for use on the web

Hi there,
First of all I just wanted to "Welcome" you to the site and a great community, I really hope you enjoy your time here. Now as for the image, It's a corker, and I would say that you have been very gentle with the HDR side of the editing process. If you had not mentioned it the fact it was HDR I might not have noticed. It's a super image and I love the reflection in the water, the lighting and colors are excellent and I really like the detail. Well done on a super image and I look forward to seeing more from a nearby local

This is what I feel HDR should look like. More natural than the cartoonish that you normally see.

I shoot a lot of handheld HDR with the D90. Only thing I think I do different is use the self timer function. I set the self timer to 2 sec and 3 shots (set in timer menu). That delay lets me get my fingers off the shutter and lets the camera do the picture taking without me mashing the camera around by pushing the shutter. Works very well..

Perhaps not with every shot I take, but usually I try and keep my use of HDR to as minimum as possible. In most circumstances (not all), I believe that if you can tell it's HDR then it's failed.

All my shots are handheld, but I do use the slight delay between pressing the button and the camera taking the shots to avoid as much camera motion as possible.

For any Nikon D90 users, this is how I setup my camera to capture the 3 exposures intended to become a HDR image.

Exactly! HDR is a cool and very usefull technique if you don't overdoo it, this is a good example of how HDR can improve a frame. Good job!
