Default Fiery Wallpaper

A bonfire at night is a relatively dim light source, which means you can leave the shutter open a reasonable amount of time, which means you can pan, shake and otherwise move the camera to create an image like this:

Fiery Wallpaper - 1

Camera: Nikon D40
Exposure: 0.8s
Aperture: f/4
Focal Length: 50mm (50mm f/1.8 lens)
ISO Speed: 200

In this shot, I chose to keep the flame at the bottom of the frame as I panned across. The exposure was short enough that (with the addition of a translucent copy of the image in overlay mode) the background is black while the flames are richly coloured. In particular, I had in mind that this could be used as a desktop wallpaper image.

Nicely done! The flames look so fluffy and pluche-like

A great result Wulf. Great concept, expertly executed and well PPed. I would have thought bonfires would have been a much brighter light source than you found. Maybe I built my bonfires bigger when I was a young 'un

And you're right, it would make a perfect desktop.

It is dim compared to, say, sunlight or looking at an LED torch. Also, for this shot, I was only clipping the tops of the flames and moving so "dim" is a relative term.

Here is the same fire, same settings except a shutter speed of 1/15s and keeping the camera still:

House244 Bonfire - 3

Here is another from the series. Here the auto white balanced added some gorgeous purples and pinks into the colours of the flame:

Here's another - vertical camera movement this time with a little twist at the end.

Fiery Wallpaper - 3
