The macro lenses work better because you can fill the frame better. You could try to blow a larger bubble and use a larger softbox. Another tip is to crop the frame tighter...btw I cropped almost all of my shots even tho the lens says to be "macro" (1:2).

Can you give me a approx measure of detergent (I used some liquid detergent and when that diddnt work I tried Oxy Clean) and water. I couldnt get my bubbles big enough. Just a bunch of small ones
I used the dish washing liquid, but I don't remember the exact measurements - maybe 5:1 water to detergent. The key is to blow a lot of these little ones and then pick one, stick a straw in it and blow it as large as it can get (draw the straw out slowly). In my experience these large bubbles could last at least cca 10 seconds.... If it burst sooner try changing the detergent/water ratio or change the type of detergent... Hope this helps!

I'd like the other people to post their bubbles here too!

Cheers! And thanks for so many views on flickr!

I found that children's bubbles work the best without having to dilute it with any water. They seem to stay the longest before bursting to give you time to get to your camera and fire away.

Now all I have to do is figure out a way to get good results with my lens(es). I don't have a macro but that's not going to stop me from trying. When i get a good result I'll post it here.

Thanks for the post, this idea is great!

Great work. I've been thinking about this for a while, but wasn't sure how to best capture the light patterns in these. Looking forward to trying out your technique and setup. Thanks for sharing.

I used bubble solution, and added a little bit of dish detergent to it. I also put 4 bendable straws end to end, with one slightly inside the next, so that I could be at the camera, and blowing bubbles at the same time. I don't have a macro lens, so it is cropped, from the kit lens. I used a homemade softbox that was 8.5x11 with a cheap strobe I got on ebay. I just got a lens coupler, so as soon as I'm able to use it with some decency, I hope to get a real macro shot of this.

mmatasic or vldecker,

How are your bubbles coming out so colorful? Mine seem as if it isn't reflecting any of the rainbow colors.

Thanks,

Harry

The color is only visible in the "catchlight". Because my "softbox" was so small the light didn't cover as much of the bubble as I would have liked it too. I did crop a lot, plus I don't have a macro lens, which would have helped. While I did get a fine web image for this, I wouldn't have been able to have gotten a decent print I will be trying again, but here is the SOOC.
